Valentines Day is a great opportunity to show your loved one just how sweet you think they are, and there are many delicious ways to do that. Of course, there is the traditional box of chocolates, but if you want to be a bit more creative and unique, you can try something homemade.
A cake is a fail safe valentine dessert, and there are many ways to make it special for the occasion. You can bake your cake with a heart-shaped pan, or use a knife to cut a heart shape out of a circular layer cake. If you choose the latter option, you can do a double layer cake, cut a heart out of the top layer, and fill it with jelly or ice cream. Smaller individual size heart shaped cakes are also popular.
Cupcakes are a fun and versatile way to say "I Love You." For example, what could be more expressive than chocolate cupcakes with fudge frosting and white lettering on top? You could personalise the message or you could just go for a one word message such as "romance", "love", "valentine", or "mine". Another cute cupcake idea is brownie heart cupcakes. Make a pan of brownies, and when they are finished using a small heart shaped cookie cutter to cut out brownie hearts. Then make your chocolate cupcakes, frost them with vanilla frosting, and top them with your brownie hearts - simple and elegant.
Cut-out sugar cookies are easy and can be decorated a number of different ways. If you colour your batter with food colouring, you can make them red or pink and cut them out as all different shaped hearts. They can also be layered together with jelly centres or decorated with sprinkles or red dots. Icing and messages could also be added if you so desire.
If cookies are your thing, but you want something a little different, brown sugar meringue cookies could be for you. Baked in the shape of a heart, these can be "brushed" with food colouring or left au natural, but either way they have a classy look about them. Light and delicious all by themselves, they can also be dressed up a bit if you put two together with some ice cream in the centre, and you have meringue cookie ice cream sandwiches.
And of course, you can never go wrong with chocolate covered strawberries. Although they are a bit messy and labour intensive, the results are certainly worth the effort. For the seriously ambitious, you can use both white chocolate and dark chocolate when you are dipping them and make them look like they are wearing tuxedos. You will definitely get an "A" for effort on that one.
