How Can I Tell if My Brownies Are Done Without a Toothpick?

by Brownie on January 1, 2012

Hi,

I'm making brownies and I just realized that I do not have any toothpicks to use to test the doneness of the brownies. I've heard not to use a fork because it's ineffective. Do any of you have any other suggestions?!

idk why a fork would be ineffective… it should work the same as a toothpick

Take your hand and pat on it
if it springs back its done
if not
you need to put it in for a little longer.

You cannot tell the done-ness of brownies by using a toothpick (or a fork). Especially if your making fudge ones!

First, I go off of the suggested baking time (either on the box or recipe). Then when the time is up, I just take a look at the edges and top. If the edges have pulled away a bit and the top look done — then they’re ready to come out of the oven!!!!
